Projects supported 2008

Principal projects :

 Dürrenmatt and Poland

Poland was the country that allowed Friedrich Dürrenmatt to conquer Eastern Europe. His play, The Visit of the Old Lady, considered to be his best, was performed in Poland and was acclaimed by the public and the media. The plays that followed were just as impressively successful. This intense relationship between Dürrenmatt and Poland has been reconstituted. It has required significant research, the results of which will be presented in a series of publications and an exhibition organized at the Dürrenmatt Centre.

The Council of the Foundation decided to finance the project, covering the research costs of Professor Jan Zielinski and his travel expenses in Poland.

Exhibition « Les Quarantes Colonnes du Souvenir » Annemarie Schwarzenbach

Organized by the Association of Friends of Annemarie Schwarzenbach, commemorative events celebrating the centenary of her birth presented her life to the public.

The writings of this major Swiss journalist, writer and poet reveal an astonishing talent and political maturity in the context of the 1930s. The Foundation contributed to the financing of the Exhibition « Les Quarantes Colonnes du Souvenir » and the vast programme of readings, conferences and concerts.

Re-edition of the Kalevala

The French translation of the Finnish epic Kalevala, an epic cycle of 22,800 verses assembled in the 19th century by Elias Lönnrot, was published in 1931. As it has no longer been available for many years, the Foundation provided its support for the financing of a reprint. This work, printed by Editions Slatkine in Geneva, appeared in 2009 in Editions Honoré Champion.

Exhibition « 40th Anniversary of the Prague Spring »

Support for the event and exhibition organized by the Dürrenmatt Centre, bringing together Czech intellectuals, authors and politicians, who were active witnesses of the Prague Spring.
