On a beautiful autumnal day, the visitors were able to walk around under the canopy and, by following a specially prepared route with nine features, to discover the library with its oak galleries, the auditorium, the underground reception area and the exhibition space. The many children enjoyed an interpretation of a story by Pierre Gripari, « The Pair of Shoes ».

At the end of the visit, everyone gathered together to try some local specialities and exchange their impressions.

By five votes out of six, the international jury of the Jan Michalski Prize for Literature selected György Dragomán for The White King from among the seven authors on the short list for the 2011 Prize.

Born in 1973 in Transylvania in the Hungarian minority, György Dragomán has lived in Budapest since 1988. His mother tongue is Hungarian. With The White King, he has created an innovative masterpiece that opens new horizons for literature from Eastern Europe.

From the naïve viewpoint of an eleven-year old boy, György Dragomán describes the sinister atmosphere of a country under the Communist yoke, shortly after the Chernobyl catastrophe. In language that is both precise and breathless, he portrays the insidious effects, the submission and the traumatic violence that permeate a profoundly degraded society.

The President of the Jury, Vera Michalski-Hoffmann, presented to György Dragomán the prize of 50,000 Swiss francs and a work of art, « Paysage avec Remparts », created by the painter Olivier O. Olivier in 2001. The Jan Michalski Foundation thus wishes to pay tribute to this artist and friend, who died last April.

The Jury also distinguished two other authors on the short list. The Icelandic novelist, poet and librettist Sjón, born in 1962, for The Blue Fox. Already translated into several languages, the novel received the highest distinction in the Nordic countries in 2005, when it was awarded the Nordic Council Literature Prize. The second finalist was Miguel Syjuco, for his first novel, Ilustrado, written in English. Born in 1976 in Manila in the Philippines into a family of politicians, he has already received several literary prizes (the Palanca Awards, the Man Asian Literary Prize). Ilustrado has been translated into several languages.

The original feature of the Jan Michalski Prize lies in its multicultural nature. It is designed to contribute to the international recognition of writers. The international jury is composed of Vera Michalski-Hoffmann, President, Włodzimierz Bolecki, Nuruddin Farah, Georges Nivat, Ilija Trojanow and Fabienne Verdier. As from January 2012, it will be supplemented by the nomination of Isabel Hilton and Yannick Haenel. Independent and unpaid, the members of the jury propose works in their various languages, and pledge to defend them. Short-listed works are translated, if necessary, into a language that is understood by all the jury members. Only books that are published and presented by the members of the jury are considered for the Jan Michalski Prize for Literature.

The philanthropic action of the Jan Michalski Foundation for Writing and Literature
The Jan Michalski Foundation for Writing and Literature was established in 2004 to commemorate Jan Michalski and perpetuate his action for the promotion of literary creation. Its calling is to promote writing through its multiple support activities, including the provision of financial assistance, the organization of literary events and the hosting of writers in residence, so as to offer them the conditions for the creation of their works. The Jan Michalski Prize for Literature extends the scope of the Foundation’s action.

The winning novel, The Lazarus Project, was written directly in English. Situated both in Chicago in 1908 and in the present in various Eastern European countries, the novel offers a wonderful combination of historical detail and the art of storytelling, all in a very inventive language, set against the background of the siege of Sarajevo.

Launched on 27 October 2009 by the Jan Michalski Foundation, the Jan Michalski Prize for Literature is designed to recompense a work of world literature. From the ten authors selected for the 2010 Prize, the members of the international Jury, Włodzimierz Bolecki, Nuruddin Farah, Vera Michalski-Hoffmann, Georges Nivat, Jorge Semprun, Ilija Trojanow and Fabienne Verdier, selected Aleksandar Hemon for his extraordinary novel, «The Lazarus Project». The President of the Jury, Vera Michalski-Hoffmann, presented the winner with the prize, worth CHF 50,000, and a work of art created especially for the occasion by artist Olivier Estoppey.

The winner, Aleksandar Hemon, was born in Sarajevo in 1964. He has lived in Chicago in the United States since 1992. The winning book, «The Lazarus Project», was written directly in English. The novel, set both in Chicago in 1908 and in the present in various Eastern European countries, marvellously combines historical detail with the art of storytelling, embellished by a highly inventive use of language and with the siege of Sarajevo as its background.

The two other finalists were Yousef Al-Mohaimeed, an author from Saudi Arabia, for his novel «Wolves of the Crescent Moon», translated from Arabic, and Tim Flannery, an Australian author, for his essay «The Weather Makers».

The work of art presented to Aleksandar Hemon was created by Olivier Estoppey, a Swiss artist. A sculptor and illustrator, he made his name with his monumental works, and particularly Les Loups. Olivier Estoppey’s sculptures have earned him many prizes, including the Grand Prix 2009 of the Canton de Vaud.

The originality of the Jan Michalski Prize lies in its multicultural nature. It is intended to contribute to the international recognition of writers.

The members of the Jury, who are independent and unpaid, submit works in their various languages and undertake to defend them. The pre-selected works are translated into a language that is understood by the different members of the Jury.

Only published works are considered for the Jan Michalski Prize for Literature. Works are submitted exclusively by the Jury for inclusion in the competition.

The library and the attached multifunctional auditorium have now been built. They are designed for the production of a large variety of cultural events. In the words of Vera Michalski-Hoffman, this space is intended to be open, joyous, abreast of global trends and movements through its contribution to cultural development.

Also nearing completion is the canopy, a sort of woven openwork covering for the whole of the built up area. With a surface area of 4,500 m2, delicately poised on 96 pillars, it is designed as a support for hanging cabins or writers’ residences, as well as those containing the future offices of the Jan Michalski Foundation.

Following the celebration, a visit of the buildings was organized for all the guests invited. Guided by the architect Vincent Mangeat, they were able to climb onto the canopy and admire the panoramic view over Lake Geneva.

With its multiplicity of buildings, the Maison de l’Ecriture has been conceived as a small city. In the words of the architect Vincent Mangeat, the project takes the form of a large house made up of small houses. Anchored to the ground or suspended so as to embrace the countryside more fully, they are all intended to accomodate the action of the Jan Michalski Foundation in support of literature.

At the heart of this cultural centre is the library, a symbolic space constructed on five levels. It will in due course house a multilingual collection of some 80,000 works covering a broad spectrum of literary movements and linguistic worlds, supplemented by the two underground floors housing up to 200,000 books. Adopting a resolutely modern style of architecture, its numerous extensions and communicating galleries will be entirely constructed in solid oak, which will give warmth. Writers will find spaces in alcoves that are equipped for writing, while comfortable reading areas will be available for the public.

Near to the library, the exhibition area, connected to a multifunctional auditorium has now also been built. They are designed for the production of a large variety of cultural events. As emphasized by the President of the Foundation, Vera Michalski-Hoffman, this space is intended to be open, joyous, abreast of global trends and movements through its contribution to cultural development.

The writers will be housed in rooms suspended from a light canopy, from where the broad view over Lake Geneva will undoubtedly be a source of inspiration.

Construction of the Maison de l’Ecriture : A technical tour de force

The architectural complexity of the Maison de l’Ecriture required numerous studies and much technical dexterity :

The canopy : A woven openwork 3,000 ton covering

Delicately poised on 96 pillars of between 9 and 18 meters in height, and up to 9 tons in weight, the canopy, with a surface area of 4,500 m2 and a thickness of 40 cm of reinforced concrete, is honeycombed with 270 bubbles. Its casing was constructed with 650 tons of shoring. It required the use of particularly dense and complex ironwork weighing 400kg per cubic meter, or four times more than a traditional construction. Six writers’ “cabins” will be attached under the canopy, with a communal cabin housing a kitchen, a dining room and a sitting room, as well as two cabins dedicated to the administration of the Jan Michalski Foundation. The canopy is nearing completion.

The concrete construction of the buildings anchored on the ground

The walls of the library and the exhibition areas, two buildings that are anchored on the ground, are 12 meters in height. To guarantee the high quality and homogenous appearance of the visible walls, they were poured from the full height. In total, 12 stages were required to complete the 165 ml of walling.

An environmentally friendly construction

The environment and energy efficiency are important aspects of the construction. The buildings are designed to achieve energy autonomy, which is made possible by the installation of efficient insulation, reinforced thermal inertia in the spaces and a highly developed concept of natural ventilation. Heat is produced by a wood chip boiler, using wood from the Commune of Montricher. The installation is completed with solar panels to cover the electricity needs of the site.

The completion of the work is planned during the course of 2013.
